Human Rights Monitoring Agenda (HURMA) don call on President Bola Tinubu to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun from office since him reach retirement age. Executive Director of HURMA, Buna Balogun, make dis call for journalists at International Press Centre in Ogba, Lagos on Friday.
According to National Pension Commission (NPC), compulsory retirement age for all grades in service na 60 years or 35 years of service. IGP Egbetokun born on September 4, 1964, and him expected to retire in September when him go reach 60 years.
Balogun say President Tinubu get exclusive right to appoint and remove IGP. "IGP Egbetokun get appointed in 2023 to hold office till him retire after 35 years of service or reach 60 years. Him due for retirement by September 2024."
HURMA say IGP Egbetokun suppose proceed on terminal leave and hand over to another officer before dem appoint successor. But National Assembly pass Police Act Amendment Bill 2020 to allow IGP stay in office till end of term.
Balogun describe lawmakers' move as "overzealousness" to "accommodate sit-tightism" of IGP Egbetokun. Him say it violate law to bend constitution for one person to stay in office. HURMA urge President Tinubu not to sign bill into law.
Lekan Alabi, legal officer of HURMA, say dem write letter to President on dis matter. Him beg President to refuse sign bill, say other officers fit succeed IGP. "We go fight dis to logical conclusion for Nigerians. We need new police command wey ready to work for people."
