Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) don file lawsuit against Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) "ova failure to account for and explain di whereabouts of over N100 billion 'dirty and bad moni' and 'other large sum of cash wey dem dey await examination' wey dem keep for various branches of CBN since 2017."
For di suit number FHC/L/MSC/441/2024 wey dem file last week for Federal High Court, Lagos, SERAP dey ask court to "direct and compel CBN to explain di whereabouts of di over N100 billion dirty and bad moni kept in various branches of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) since 2017." SERAP also ask court to "direct and compel CBN to explain di whereabouts of di N7.2 billion wey dem budget for di construction of CBN Dutse branch building for 2010 and di N4.8 billion wey dem budget for di renovation of CBN Abeokuta branch for 2009 and to publish di names of contractors wey collect di moni."
SERAP argue say, "Explaining di whereabouts of di missing public funds, publishing di names of those wey dem suspect say dem responsible and ensuring say dem bring dem to justice and di full recovery of any missing public funds go serve di public interest and end di impunity of perpetrators." SERAP also argue say, "Dis grim allegations by di Auditor-General of di Federation suggest grave violations of di public trust, di provisions of di Nigerian Constitution, di CBN Act, and national and international anticorruption obligations."
Base on wetin SERAP tok, "All dis grave violations also reflect failure of CBN accountability more generally and dey directly linked to di institution's persistent failure to comply with its Act and anti-corruption standards." SERAP argue say, "These allegations don seriously undermine di ability of CBN to effectively discharge its statutory functions and di public trust and confidence for di bank. CBN ought to be committed to transparency and accountability for its operations."
Di suit wey SERAP lawyers Kolawole Oluwadare and Adelanke Aremo file on behalf of SERAP, read in part: "Nigerians get di right to know di whereabouts of di public funds. Granting di reliefs sought go advance di right of Nigerians to restitution, compensation and guarantee of non-repetition."
