Nigeria don report 40 new cases of Lassa fever wit five deaths wey happen from 27 February to 5 March. Dis information na from Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) wey publish dia latest situation report on Tuesday for dia website for week nine. According to NCDC, di new cases happen for Bauchi, Ondo, Taraba, Edo, and Ebonyi states.
Dem also talk say from week one to week nine, dem don record 109 deaths and case fatality rate (CFR) na 16.1 per cent wey dey lower dan di CFR for di same period in 2022 wey na 18.6 per cent. Di disease control centre still talk say 22 states don record at least one confirmed case across 89 Local Government Areas and 72 per cent of all confirmed cases dey from three states wey be Ondo, Edo, and Bauchi.
NCDC still talk say di number of suspected cases don increase compare to di one wey dem report for di same period in 2022 and one new healthcare worker don dey affected for dis reporting week.
Lassa fever na acute viral hemorrhagic illness wey dey spread when person come in contact wit food or household items wey rodents wey carry di virus don contaminate. Di symptoms of Lassa fever include fever, headache, sore throat, general body weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pains, chest pain, and in severe cases, unexplainable bleeding from ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and other body openings.
NCDC still add for dia report say some of di challenges wey dey come with response to Lassa fever for Nigeria na late presentation of cases wey dey lead to increase in CFR, poor health-seeking behaviour due to high cost of treatment and clinical management of di infection, poor environmental sanitation conditions, and poor awareness wey dem observe for high-burden communities.
